Look Who's Turning Five!

Probably one of my favourite craft shows to check out is Got Craft? In 2007, this indie craft market of locally produced handmade goods emerged as a venue where Vancouver artists could share their wares and for potential buyers to find original handmade goods.

This will be Got Craft?'s 5th birthday on Sunday, May 8th from 10am to 5pm at the Royal Canadian Legion on Commercial Drive at East 6th Avenue. Admission is $3 and the first 45 people get a sweet swag bag... you'll have to get there early... I hear people wait hours before the opening just to get one of these bags!

One more thing... this will be Canada's first Etsy sponsored craft fair! How exciting!

My version of the DIY Wedding!

Ok. So I know I've been promising to share the details of my wedding for months now. I admit that I needed a long break from anything remotely related to a wedding,especially after an "unforgettable"honeymoon in Hawaii! (Can I say rain, food poisoning, hospital, and then more rain?!) Thanks to the girls at Gucio Photography for all these beautiful photographs.

Location

Although this was not my first choice, this location worked within my budget for a buffet style reception. It ended up being the perfect location.

Transportation

I asked my sister if I could borrow her Nissan Figaro for our photo shoot. How cool that it happened to be a green colour too! I used card stock, paper doilies, and ribbon for my "just married" sign. I also made my own pink paper po m.

The Look

Let's start with the shoes shall we? His are from B ro wn's and mine are a pair found in a local bridal shop and taken in to a shoe shop to be dyed a bright green. My husband looked very handsome in a Hugo Boss suit from Harry Rosen! I purchased a very well made pink silk tie from Rabbit Stop who also made a different tie for my father. His shirt was found at Winner's and his suspenders and hat were from Le C hateau.

I made all the boutonnieres for my husband, best man, and fathers on both sides. Some of the supplies for making them were from Moon's Feather s, E Fine Gifts, and my favourite fabric store in Vancouver, Dressew!

I found my dress at Isabelle's Bridal in North Vancouver and I didn't even have to shorten the length! My older sister bought my dress for me as a wedding gift. Lucky girl right? My custom made bridal shrug was made by Holly Stalder.

An absolutely beautiful design with real vintage details. I wanted to learn how to make fabric flowers from scratch, so I purchased a french floral ironing tool from Chocolate Letters and made my own hair piece with some added details of ostrich fringe feathers and french veiling from Kimonos and Pocket saurus. You can find one of my earlier attempts in my second shop, Curious Nook. Notice the pink paper poms that were attached to the chairs down the aisle? I made all of those for just over $2. They were cheap, cute, portable, and recyclable!

My hair and make up was done by Mink Makeup & Hair. My hair was actually sewn into place. It didn't move the whole day! For my something blue, I had this ivory satin clutch custom made for me with a turquoise blue satin lining. I then sewed on this pale pink vintage millinery bloom I found at Mary Not Martha.

The Maid of Honor & the Mothers

My best friend is gorgeous and would look good in a potato sack, so my plans to have the maid of honor look worse than the bride would not have worked. lol. I found this great dress at H&M in a pink and green theme. How perfectly cute!

I made her bridal sash by pinning a corsage I made to a thick satin ribbon that was hand tied around her waist. The corsage was made the same way as the corsage pins I made for both mothers. I sewed layers of pink crinoline and singed satin petals together with a vintage pearl and rhinestone button I purchased from Etsy. I then added some vintage millinery bits to finish the look. What do you think?

Flowers and Decor

Although all the florals and set up of the decor was done by Lynn of Fr om the Heart Florals and Decor, all of the table elements like the milk glass vases,vintage cameras,

bird cages, vintage magnifying glasses, stacked vintage books, vintage keys, and other small treasures were collected by me from places like Value Village, the Vancouver Flea Market, Ebay, and various Etsy shops.

The table markers were small frames I painted white and backed with floral paper from an old used calendar. Cotton sewing tape was then hand stamped with the names of some of our favourite jazz singers. I printed large letters that read "just married" onto card stock in my pink and green colour theme and strung it into a banner using pink seam binding.

The Details

I made a photobooth using Ikea fabric and plastic plumbing. It saved me a bundle and was probably the most popular feature at the reception. To find out how to make one of your own, clic k here. I collected some kitschy props and some that were authentically vintage like the yellow feather fan from Makins and he 1940's hat that belonged to my grandfather. My favourite prop was the mustache stick I purchased from Something's Hiding in Here.

Some More Details

The birds are from Dres sew nestled in a nest from Caramelos. The painted birdcage prop was found at an antique store in Gastown and the suitcase was found at the Burnaby Hospice Thrift Store. The vintage handkerchief monogrammed with a "W" was found on Ebay.

I purchased handmade soap from Etsy and cut them up to fit these muslin cotton bags from Celetial Gifts. I then stamped a bird image and secured the bag with a piece of vintage lace I collected from thrift shops. I also attached a handmade tag punched out of designer card stock which was stamped with a mason jar image and our initials with a heart that was hand carved by me!

The "Eat Drink And Be Married!" drink flags were made out of coffee stir sticks I found in a dollar store.I created the green damask and pink text on photoshop, printed the flags, cut and paste them to the stir sticks. I thought they were a fun detail at the wedding.

I didn't want to deal with seating cards, so I made a simple seating plan using the table names as a way for guests to find a seat. It allowed guests to be able to pick their own seat as well. Throughout the entrance of the reception area, I had framed images of wedding pictures from my family and my husband's family. Guests loved looking at these moments in time and it added to the vintage feel of our reception area.

The guest book area was staged with a vintage Underwood Noiseless typewriter I had found in Portland for only $36. It held the guest book sign and was the backdrop to the handmade journal I used as a guest book made by Sammis 2 Shoes. Yes, that's my engagement ring. We picked it out together at Spence Diamonds.

Something New

I knew that people would be tapping their glasses for us to kiss, but I wanted to enjoy the reception rather than kissing every 5 seconds. My dad had this putting green that worked in with the wedding location, as it was a golf course.

Instead of tapping glasses for a kiss, people had to get a hole in one for the bride and groom to kiss. If they didn't get a hole in one, the person had to kiss someone at their table! Oddly enough, most people did get a hole in one! lol.

The book to the left was the funniest gift I got at my bridal shower. My mother in law found this great vintage book and we ended up using it in our wedding photos. The best keepsake ever! lol.

Ever since I received an order for pillows, I've been working on making more of them and experimenting with fabrics for my shop and future craft shows. I'm also working on some craft display options which I hope to post about by the end of this week. Talk about time consuming!

I love the soft hand of vintage bed linens. I also love hunting around second hand shops to find hidden jewels, ready to be transformed into something new. How cute would these be in a little girls room?

I added an extra vintage touch with these great vintage plastic buttons I found online. Once you start collecting buttons and fabric, it can be VERY addictive!

I love green and this leafy pattern. Can you see the wood buttons in the shape of apples below?

Akane Designs: Life is busy!

I've been concentrating on my job a lot more lately, so I haven't been working on my Etsy shops or this blog that much. My laptop, tv, washing machine, and dishwasher all decided to break down within a month as well. All of this just after a wedding I had to pay for. Oh... and I ended up with food poisoning on my honeymoon to make things extra special. lol. So, needless to say, my priorities shifted lately, but I'm going to make more of an effort to balance everything out.

Anyway, I'm currently working on improving my Etsy shop. I want to change the look of the shop, the branding, the photographs, and the products I offer. I'm still going to create jewellery, but I'd like to improve my designs and add a variety of other products. I'll be testing these new products with different people and would like your feedback as well! In the meantime, my destash store is still up.

I love vintage fabric and would like to incorporate it into some of my design ideas. Here are some pillows I made for a client this past week. I'm debating if I should offer them in my shop. I have a wholesale price in mind, but I'm unsure of an ideal retail price.

I first noticed this week's featured seller when she joined Etsy Canada, a social network for Canadian Etsy sellers. I was impressed by her products, branding, and photos for such a new online shop. Darlene of Mountain Farms So a p has had to make tough decisions as a Canadian seller. One being that she only sells to customers within Canada. Any Canadian online seller knows all too well that Canada Post makes it almost impossible for Canadian shops to compete with their US counterparts. In saying that, I've noticed that with determination and creative marketing, many Canadian Etsians have established strong businesses on Etsy. Tell us about yourself
My name is Darlene, and I have been married to my husband Bill for 25 years, and we have 3 grown boys. I started making soap in 1997, and fell in love with both the art of making soap, and how it made my skin feel. My company was officially started in 2001.

Explain a typical day of creating
When I plan to make soap, I give myself lots of time. The day is dedicated to making soap. Usually I will plan up to a week before on how I'm going to great my soap. Sometimes I will make a small batch a day or two before, so I can created some of the spikes or swirls, and insert them the day of making soap. Once I've made the soap it is poured into molds, then wrapped in towels and left overnight (or 24 hours). The next day I remove the soap from the molds, and cut. This is when I get to see what I've made. Sometimes it turns out the way I imagined and sometimes it doesn't, but I love the process.

How did you get started on Etsy or your business?
I found out about Etsy through people I know at the farmer's market who also sell on Etsy.

How long did it take you to brand your shop?
Etsy has been a little slow going for me, but I have my main website which has been very successful. There are very many soap makers on Etsy, so sometimes it takes awhile to get recognized.

What luxury item are you saving up for?
There are so many talented people selling on Etsy. I'm a country girl, and absolutely love this jelly cabinet http://www.etsy.com/listing/19538466/original-design-farmhouse-primitive.

Weddings: More Photobooth Fun!

So I promised to share some photos from my wedding based around the photobooth I built out of pvc and some ikea fabric. If you want to see how I made it, please click the picture below.

I left the birdcage for my cards for a size reference.
The structure was probably around 8 feet tall and 6 or 7 feet wide.

Here's my best friend and maid of honor taking a photo at the photobooth
to give you an idea of how it worked. One of my friends set the camera up for me
and will be putting the images on a disc for me. I still have to get it from him.

Although this photo of some of my friends is not from the photobooth camera,
it gives you an idea of how your guests can play in front of the backdrop.
All these photos were taken by my sister with her own camera.

I’m a 30-something Mommy/wife/artist with a passion for graphic design & photography! I’m one of those people that just can’t sit idle. Tell us about your creative process

Most of the time, my creative process begins when I end my day. As soon as I climb into bed and close my eyes, the ideas start swarming. I suppose it’s my subconscious way of relaxing or meditating. A few months back I figured it would probably be a good idea to put a pad and pen on my night stand to jot it all down. Then, I work off my lists. Seems to be working pretty well so far!

Why is keeping the handmade movement alive so important?

Before starting my own business, I really didn’t think about it much. Funny thing was, I often gravitated toward buying handmade items as gifts anyway…they just seem a little more special when you know who it’s coming from and the hands that actually cared enough to make it.

What's one thing you wished you had known before you opened up your shop?

I really wish I wasn’t so afraid to price my items. In the beginning, I was just too excited to get my work out there and wanted itto sell. I priced things too quickly without factoring in the actual price to produce, package and ship. Even though I was pleased with my sales, at the end of the first quarter, I was in “the red”. I learned my lesson the hard way but realized, if you have a product that you work hard on and love, other people will too and will pay what it’s worth.

Where do you see yourself personally and professionally in 10 years?

Personally :: I foresee another little McClellan running around the house and terrorizing their big brother, a little more chaos and a lot more fun!

Professionally :: Hmmm…each year proves to be better than the last. So, with that in mind, I’m hoping to get the “Bushel & Peck” name out there and recognized. I have a few minor & major things in the works and just hope they pan out as planned. Then, there’s always that sweet “Brick & Mortar” place I’ve always dreamed of having…only time will tell!

Weddings: How to make a photobooth!

So as many of you know, I got married over the past weekend. As a way to try to save money, I used Etsy to find unique custom items and to get some great DIY ideas for the wedding. The best DIY item I incorporated was a photobooth. It was a hit at the wedding; keeping all the guests entertained! I touched a bit on this topic awhile back, but I focussed more on the props. If you're interested in the prop ideas, take a look here. The great thing about my design is that it is free standing. No need for nails, tape, or permission from your site location. It's collapsible and totally portable, so you can set it up inside or outside!
Now I'm more of a visual learner, so I took some pictures to show the stages of putting the parts together. Hopefully, you'll be able to understand my instructions! lol.

These are the basic parts you will need to make your backdrop. I used 1" PVC pipe, PVC slip connectors, and some industrial glue. All items were purchased and cut down at the Home Depot. I would recommend using the next size up pipe size, but this was all they had at the time. A bit flimsy, but it did survive the day. I glued the connectors to some of the pipe to make it easier to transport and identify each part.

Here's the first step in putting the parts together. The pipes with the "T-slip" connectors are the bases and the vertical pipes have the cross slip connectors. You should know that you don't need to use cross slip connectors; t-slip connectors will do however they didn't have enough for me at the time. I had to improvise.

Here's a closer look at the point of connection between the two parts. I've colour marked it to make it easier to put the photobooth together.

At this point, you can add your first horizontal bar. I got this design idea from a ballet barre I use in my dance classes. If you want to make it stronger, I would add another horizontal bar at the bottom of the structure.

You now need to add the second level. PVC pipe with "L" slip connectors are inserted into the cross slip connectors to raise to a height of around 8 feet tall, but you can adjust the height. A second horizontal pipe is then attached to the top by inserting it into the two "L" slip connectors.

Make a slip pocket on the top of your fabric and slip the top horizontal pipe through the pocket. I got mine from Ikea and sewed it horizontally at the top and in the middle to accomodate the width of the photobooth. I loved the vintage feel of this fabric, but you can use anything from bed sheets to old lace!

Here's the final photobooth. I was so proud of myself because it was handmade, it saved me money, and it was such a fun wedding detail. I don't have any pictures to share yet, but I'll post some of the results as soon as I can.

So I was checking out the net to find out how to naturally dye fabric. I'm trying to be more eco-friendly and I'm really into the whole "process is important" when creating anything with my hands. I came across this product called milk paint.

Milk paint is basically a formula of milk protein, lime, and other natural pigments found in nature. It's breathable, odourless, and doesn't need primer! You gotta love that! It's been around for thousands of years... heck even King Tutankhamen's tomb had artifacts painted with milk paint! The Egyptians were crafty weren't they!

With the resurgence of earth friendly products, including products for crafting, it looks like milk paint is regaining popularity! Don't get me wrong... this stuff is not fool proof. It apparently spoils just like regular milk if not refridgerated, but it leaves the unique softness of an antique finish. This stuff can be used on walls, furniture, even metal and glass!

I’m a 20-something year old who loves life. About half a year ago, I decided I wanted to do something more with my life, something more than just your “9-5”. To cut the long story short, I came across a screen-printing machine and I’ve been showing a little bit of who I am through each shirt. Besides making shirts, I like eating, watching movies, spending time with family and friends, laughing and eating.

Besides Etsy, where can we find your work?
At the moment, my work is only in my Etsy shop, my blog, and my facebook fan page.

Tell us about your creative process
First I need to find inspiration for a shirt design or message. I usually bounce ideas off family and friends and see how they like it or I find inspiration from things that are going on. (For example, “Nobody Cares About Your Status Updates” was inspired from all the useless updates about farms, cafes and mafias I was getting on my news feed). After that, I put the design together using Adobe Photoshop with the help of my Wacom Bamboo Tablet. Once the design is finished, it is printed out on a transparency and the image is “burned” onto my screenprinting machine’s screen. Once the image is “burnt” onto the screen, this creates something like a stencil that I can push ink through so that image gets transferred onto the shirt.

What's one thing you wished you had known before you opened up your shop?
I wish I would’ve known the importance of organizing finances when I first started out. I suppose I underestimated where this business could go so I am now playing catch up – trying to find the right bank, the right bank account, the right business credit card, etc, etc. If you are just starting or planning to start your own business, take care of this early on, you’ll be thankful later! :)

Where do you see yourself personally and professionally in 10 years?
Personally – I see myself settled down with my own family, living a comfortable life, and travelling at least once a year.

Professionally – I see myself as a stronger business woman physically, emotionally, and mentally. I see myself having a great network of other business people that I can meet with, work with, and get advice from. I see myself also with the possibility of having a physical shop in my city!

So as many of you know, I'll be getting married in July and I've been trying to do the DIY wedding thing. I bought a veil from Etsy, but I really love the handmade flowers and birdcage veils that have a vintage feel. I love trying to figure out how to make things, so I thought I'd try making the boutonnieres, corsages, and flower accessories myself. I've tried making many different styles of fabric flowers using different techniques. My recent favourite is using a flame to singe the edge of cut out fabric petals to make them curl. It's easy, fun, and has a really appealing finish. I still haven't gone through all my flower tutorials that are found in my free tutorials list, but I'm not new to making flowers by hand.

While I was searching the net, I came across some interesting tools that looked vaguely familiar to me. Otherwise known as French flower making tools, these brass tools are heated up in a flame like an iron and then pressed into a piece of fabric to create the desired shape. A little less time consuming to use is the Japanese electric flower making tool with interchangeable tips. I thought about using everyday objects such as forks, spoons, melon baller or butter knife to use in place of these tools, but I like my gadgets! I actually found the electrical one below on Etsy today! I already bought it, but the seller may have another one in stock. This is an old stock unused set. I'll let you know how well they work once I get them. I can't wait!

So I'm having a daytime wedding this summer and I'd like to incorporate a photobooth to keep some of the guests entertained. I love, love, love the photobooths I've been seeing on the net that feature fabric backgrounds. I'm going to try asking the venue if I can use reuseable sticky hooks that can hold 5 pounds each and leaves no damage when taken down. I figured I could use these hooks, a rod or dowel, and hang some fabric off an available rod. This way, I can avoid having to deal with portable plastic piping to set up!

My name is Corrie, (or Corra..or Corrabelle...nickname since birth!!) I'm an illustrator, crafter, gardener, tea drinker, journal keeper, soon to be wife, and the mother of a mad scientist and a future rock star. I'm completely in love with the arts, creation has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. Be it music, film,literature,graphics, they all have a soft spot in my heart.

What is your creative process?
My creative process is a little more complex than one would assume. When I first started carving stamps, I was in jr. high. I've been a journal keeper since I could write my own name, and frequently used rubber stamps in my journals. I didn't want the same rubber stamps that everyone else had though. I didn't want someone to open my journal 100 years from now, and see a stamp that thousands of other people had purchased at michaels. I wanted my own.
So I started carving on erasers while listening in class. (I have to have my hands busy in order to pay attention, i've always been this way, so the teachers never really questioned this strange habit.) I made an entire alphabet in a few classes, and then numbers, and bugs and faces, and patterns...before I knew it, I was addicted.

When I started selling these though, I realised that in order to make the same stamp twice, I needed to constantly be drawing out the exact same image to transfer to my linoleum. I use graphite on paper for the illustration, turn it face down onto the rubber, and transfer it by rubbing the back of the paper with a bone folder. Once it's transfered, that illustration might work once more for another transfer, but one is about it. I could only do this for so long though as sales started picking up and this was really a pretty slow process. So I started carving all of my designs in reverse. I have a backwards version of every stamp in my shop. Now, when someone orders a hedgehog or a fox, I pull out my drawer of stamps labeled "critters", find the ordered critter, and just stamp it right onto the rubber. And once it's carved, it's facing the right way again. The only part that i have to draw out each time now is a totally custom stamp, or the names on my bookplates.

What promotional tool or technique has worked for you the most?
I didn't actually start promoting my shop until sometime last year. I didn't have time! Relisting as soon as an item sells, and frequently posting new designs seemed to be my best tool for online sales. Locally, it's word of mouth. After I had a bit more time, I opened a flickr account and started my blog at www.themayberrysparrow.com . My blog really isn't about only my work, but just having the etsy mini listed on my blog has resulted in sales.

Why is supporting handmade so important?
I support handmade for several reasons. I like things that are original, clothes that thousands of other people aren't wearing, toys that have purpose and are well made. Items that have a story behind them, an artist who put time and hard earned skill into their work. I have a hard time buying items that were most likely created in sweat shops, possibly by children. I also don't like that so many hand crafting methods seem to be dying arts. I want to support them all I can.

Where do you see yourself personally and professionally in ten years?
Down the road, I hope to do a lot more with my illustrations. While rubber stamps are fun, I have a lot more hope for my designs. Paper, fabric, stationery etc. I also have carpel tunnel syndrome in both wrists, so I know I can't keep carving forever. I did just purchase a machine that will allow me to make polymer stamps (once I figure it all out!) and i'll be able to make the stamps by a sheet, instead of individually. My plan is to still carve the initial prototype, and make the stamps based on the stamped image of that design, so that they still have the same hand carved style.

Finds & Tutorial: Paper Yarn? What will they think of next!

So I stumbled on this portfolio by German artist Greetje Van Tiem and what did I find? A totally innovative and unusual way to use paper! I had heard of spinning plastic bags into "plarn" but it never occured to me that you could spin paper! As part of her art research project, Van Tiem experimented with paper yarn by weaving, sewing, and knitting it into art and home decor. Check out her rug and ottoman!

Here's a book called "Paper Yarn" by Uta Donath, Eva Hauk, and Petra Hoffmann that has 24 different projects using this medium. You can purchase this online here.

You can check out this visual flow chart on how this product is made in factories. This material can be used to make clothing, bed linens, and even furniture! Check out Woodnotes for some more examples of fabric and furniture mad of paper yarn. I'm all for handmade, but it's nice to see that larger manufacturers are starting to go green and are keeping the asthetic design in mind. Canadian Business: Crafting Legally in Canada

Are you starting your own small handmade business in Canada? Are you unsure of your legal obligations? Are you a part time crafter who is unsure whether you need to declare your hobby income, even if it's just $100? I did some online research that addresses these exact questions, but please do not take this as expert advice. I am merely posting links I feel that may direct you to the answers you need. This is a basic overview, so check out the main site links for a more in depth look at requirements. Please keep in mind that this information was up to date when this article was posted. Always do your own research as it is your own business. Double, triple check your sources and always follow your local city requirements.

CANADIAN REQUIREMENTS
The following information was taken from the Canada Revenue Agency.

What is a business?: A business is an activity that you intend to carry on for profit and there is evidence to support that intention. We consider that a business starts whenever you start some significant activity that is a regular part of the business or that is necessary to get the business going.

Setting up your business: There are three types of business structure: sole proprietorship, partnership, and corporation. If you're an Etsy crafter, you're likely under sole proprietorship or partnership. A sole proprietorship is an unincorporated business that is owned by one person who has sole responsibility for making decisions, receives all the profits, claims all losses, and does not have separate legal status from the business. You pay personal income tax on all revenue generated by your business and assume all the risks of the business even to your personal property and assets.

What am I responsible for?: As a sole proprietor, you have to register for the goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST) if your worldwide annual taxable revenues are more than $30,000. You have to register for GST/HST if you provide taxable goods and services in Canada and you are not a small supplier. You are a small supplier if you are a sole proprietor with total taxable revenues (before expenses) from all your businesses of $30,000 or less in the last four consecutive calendar quarters and in any single calendar quarter; or you are a partnership or a corporation and the total taxable revenues of the partnership or corporation are $30,000 or less in the last four consecutive calendar quarters and in any single calendar quarter. If your total taxable revenues exceed $30,000 ($50,000 for public service bodies) in any single calendar quarter or in four consecutive calendar quarters, you are no longer considered a small supplier and you have to register for GST/HST.

Do I need to register in BC if my sales are small?
It depends. Certain individuals and groups that occasionally make retail sales (e.g. home-based crafts persons) may be eligible to choose whether or not to register and collect PST. To be eligible for optional registration, you must have gross annual sales of $10,000 or less of qualifying goods and services, not regularly make sales or leases of goods or services from established commercial premises, and not maintain established business premises.

Who does not need to register?
You do not need to register as a vendor if you sell or lease only non-taxable goods (e.g. food for human consumption), provide only non-taxable services (e.g. dry cleaning, accounting and hairdressing), are not in business but occasionally sell goods at garage sales, flea markets, craft fairs or fund raising sales, or you are a wholesaler or manufacturer and do not make sales to the end user.

With the Christmas holidays, my grad studies, and report card time, I've been behind on updating my blog! Never fear, I'm back with a great new giveaway and interview with featured Canadian seller of A little bit of pretty!

Tell us about yourself
My name is Kim and I am the designer and owner of A little bit of pretty, a shop that specializes in unique handmade semi precious gemstone jewellery. I live in Saskatoon, SK with my sister, her husband, their 11 month old daughter (my little sweetie!), and our 2 cats :) I have a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of Saskatchewan that I am not currently using because I have decided to pursue owning my own business instead! My geology background certainly influences the aesthetic of my shop though, as I favour using real gemstones and precious metals for my designs.
I very much hope that one day I will be running my shop as a full time business. I recently have gone back to work full time, but before that I got to be stay-at-home auntie and kitty kat mommy :) In my free time – when I have some – I like to chill watching movies, drinking tea, and shopping!

What promotional tool or technique has worked for you the best?
Ha! I wish I knew :) My shop is fairly new and before this I didn’t use the internet for anything other than surfing, email, or shopping so I have had a very steep learning curve! I spend a significant amount of time looking for promotional opportunities – it’s kind of frustrating when I think about how much time that actually takes!
I would say that giveaways are a great way to drive traffic to your shop and make sure that people look at every item you have there. If you blog, and you have people entering the giveaway there, that gets traffic reading your blog as well – but you have to advertise your giveaway on outside sites though! There are tons of sites out there that are dedicated to handmade giveaways. It is definitely worth the time reading through other people’s blogs as well – several offer advertising opportunities at reasonable rates, and if you score ad space on a blog that gets a lot of traffic then that could translate into a lot of traffic to your shop as well.
I twitter and facebook too which have worked well in generating traffic. Also submit your shop to every handmade directory out there! And set up Google Analytics so you can find out where your traffic comes from generally – this will help you when it comes to purchasing ad space.

Why is supporting handmade so important?
I grew up in a house where everything (and I mean everything!) was made by my Mom. We always had a garden or at least a section in someone else’s where we grew fruits and vegetables for preserving. My mom made jams, bread, pickles, chutneys…. Everything! :) She also is an amazing seamstress, and of course made all of our clothes when we were growing up. So I have had a great appreciation for handmade right from the beginning. I think that is why I began to make my own jewellery, the quality is better, I can make it exactly how I want it, and I know how many hours went into it!

Supporting Handmade is important because :
1) Every item is unique
2) A lot more thought and creativity goes into each item, not to mention hours of work, and love :)
3) Handmade artists take a vast amount of pride in their work, so you know you are buying something of immense quality
4) Handmade artists are grateful to each and every one of their customers because without them we wouldn’t be able to do what we love, and therefore much more likely to go out of their way to satisfy their customers

Do you have any advice for new Canadian Etsians?
Yes! Do your research! Before you set up shop, take the time to cruise around the site and figure out how it works. Visit the forums, check out the virtual labs, check out your potential competition! When you think you are ready to set up shop – start with a soft launch. I read an Etsy Success email from Daniellexo a couple of weeks ago that advised about a soft launch and it is so true! Trust me, I did all the research, and I still had tons I needed to learn and still do :) If you open shop with a small selection to start with, the process will be less overwhelming. Also get involved in the community. Sellers are also buyers – I have heard that over and over and it’s true! A big part of selling online is developing a personal relationship with your potential customers because you don’t have the opportunity to get to know them face to face. I am not as involved in the forums as I should be because I simply don’t have the time. However I do write a guest post on CanArtisan every week that still allows me to get involved in the community while promoting other shops – exposure for me and helping others out, win-win! :)
What it really comes down to is submitting your shop for anything and everything, and never turn down an opportunity! You need to be persistent and dedicated always.

What was your first purchase on Etsy?
My first purchase on Etsy was a monogrammed initial wax seal pendant from RitzyMisfit. I love it and I wear it all the time – you should check out her shop :)

Tell us about yourself
My name is Jenn Hill, I live in Portland OR with my partner, daughter, sweet kitty named Fifi and 5 bantam chickens.

What is your creative process
My creative process varies depending on what I'm working on. Often I am inspired by something unexpectedly which can lead to me doing some sketches or just cutting into some fabric and seeing what happens. I find inspiration from vintage children's and craft books as well as Japanese style and design.

What promotional tool or technique has worked for you the most?
I think etsy in itself is an amazing promotional tool. I don't do any advertising, but I have a blog and twitter page.

What advice would you give to a new Etsy artist?
Make things that you love that you think others will love too. I think if you do that, you'll be successful. It's also very important to take nice photos. They don't have to be artistic or fancy. Simple, clean photos can be the difference between selling and not.

Where do you see yourself personally and professionally in 10 years?
In ten years, I hope to still be doing what I'm doing now, making things for people to love. I would like to write a craft book and possibly do some teaching, but I'm happy to just be creating.
